Fitting In: The "Cool Kids" Are Exhausted
We’ve all been there: standing in a room, clutching a drink, and performing a frantic mental audit. Is my laugh too loud? Did I just say something weird? The urge to "fit in" is a biological hangover from when being kicked out of the tribe meant literally being eaten by a saber-toothed tiger.
1. Fitting In is an Eraser
There is a massive difference between belonging and fitting in.
Fitting in is about assessing a situation and changing yourself to be accepted.
Belonging is about being exactly who you are and finding out that you’re already enough.
When you spend your energy camouflage-ing, you’re essentially erasing the very things that make you a "limited edition" human. If you hide your quirks to be liked by everyone, you end up being truly known by no one.
2. The "Cool Kids" Are Exhausted
We tend to think the people at the center of the circle have it figured out. In reality, maintaining a "standard" persona is high-maintenance. It requires constant monitoring of trends, opinions, and social cues.
"Privacy is luxury, but being yourself is ultimate freedom."
When you stop caring about the mold, you reclaim all that wasted CPU power. Imagine what you could do with the mental energy you currently spend worrying about your reputation.
3. You Can't Find Your Tribe if You're Incognito
If you’re pretending to be a minimalist who loves silent retreats just to fit in with a certain group, you’ll never find the loud, chaotic maximalists who actually share your love for vintage arcade games and neon decor.
By being unapologetically "weird," you act as a beacon. You help the other people who feel like you find their way to you.
The Bottom Line
The world doesn't need another carbon copy. It’s already got plenty of those. What the world actually lacks is authenticity.
The moment you stop trying to fit in is the moment you actually start to stand out. And trust me, the view from the "outside" is much more interesting anyway.
So, what’s one "weird" thing about you that you’re going to stop hiding today?
